SPEND WITHOUT CALLS

Why is your Google Ads spending money with no calls?

Written for local businesses where the conversion is a phone call, not a checkout.

Sources checked September 20, 2026.

HOW EARLY IS TOO EARLY

Is it actually too early to tell?

Four things Google says about conversion timing. Checked September 20, 2026.

  1. Up to 90 days.

Google says conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click, depending on the conversion window you chose.

    Google Ads Help

  2. Check data that ends 30 days ago.

Google's instructions say to check that your date range ends at least 30 days ago so the report has complete conversion data.

    Google Ads Help

  3. Early numbers look worse than they are.

Google says your spend is fully reported while conversions that arrive later are still missing, so cost per conversion can look higher than it really is.

    Google Ads Help

  4. You can see your own delay.

Google says you can segment by Conversions then Days to conversion to see how long your customers actually take.

If your campaign is two weeks old, some of the answer is that you are reading an incomplete report.

THE FIRST THING TO CHECK

Are the calls happening but not being counted?

In a local account this is the most common cause, and the easiest to miss.

  1. A call is not a form.

Someone with a burst pipe at 11pm taps the number. They do not fill anything in. If your only conversion action is a form submission, that call is invisible.

  2. Invisible calls teach the wrong lesson.

Bidding optimises toward the conversions it can see. If calls are not counted, it learns that the campaign does not work and moves your money away from the keywords that were producing jobs.

  3. Three ways in, three things to count.

A form, a phone tap and a WhatsApp message are three different events. Counting them as one, or counting only one of them, hides most of what your ads produced.

IN ORDER

What are the six causes, in the order worth checking?

Timing guidance comes from Google Ads Help, checked September 20, 2026. The ordering is our view, not Google's.
CheckWhat it looks likeWhy it is this order
Conversion trackingClicks and spend, no conversions at allIf this is wrong, every number below it is wrong too
TimeCampaign or keyword is under a month oldGoogle says to check data ending 30 days ago for complete figures
The searches you matchedSpend spread across many unfamiliar search termsYou can be paying for people who were never going to call
Where the click landedTraffic arrives, nobody contacts youA page about everything answers nobody's specific question
Who can reach youCalls come in, jobs do notA missed call at 11pm is a job that went to somebody else
Budget and areaAds stop early, or reach the wrong townsFixing this before the five above just spends more on the same problem

WHO YOU PAID FOR

Four kinds of search that spend money and never call. All four are common in trades.

  1. Somebody wanting a career.

How to become a plumber. Electrician apprenticeship. These people want a job, not a tradesperson.

  2. Somebody doing it themselves.

How to fix a leaking tap yourself. DIY inspection checklist. They are looking for instructions, not a quote.

  3. Somebody looking up a word.

What is a combi boiler. These are definitions, not jobs.

  4. Somebody in the wrong place.

A search from outside the area you actually serve.

Broad match is the usual reason these get matched at all, and it is on Google's auto-apply list of changes that can be applied without you approving each one. What needs your approval

WHAT TO DO TODAY

How do you check, in order?

Five steps. Do them in this order, because each one changes how you read the next.

  1. 01

    Open your conversion actions

Check each one has recorded something recently. If a phone tap or a WhatsApp click has no action at all, that is your answer.

  2. 02

Set the date range to end 30 days ago

Google says this is what gives you complete conversion data.

    Google Ads Help

  3. 03

    Segment by days to conversion

Google says this shows how long your customers actually take after clicking.

    Google Ads Help

  4. 04

    Read your search terms

Look for career searches, DIY searches and definitions. Those are the ones to exclude.

  5. 05

    Check your auto-apply settings

Broad match, Search Partners and Display expansion can be applied without approving each change.

    Google Ads Help

If steps 1 and 2 explain it, stop there. Most of the time they do.

HOW VETTEDAD HANDLES IT

How does VettedAd handle this?

Two of the six causes above are design decisions rather than things to remember. VettedAd sets them in code.

THE NUMBER THAT MATTERS MOST

A keyword under 14 days old cannot be paused.

The most expensive mistake in a new account is not a bad keyword. It is switching off a good one in week two, before the conversions it earned have been reported.

Illustration only. Not real account data.

Keyword, day 6

No conversions yet.

  1. Three conversion actions, not one.

The form, the website phone tap and the WhatsApp or outbound click are tracked separately, with separate tags that do not share an identifier.

  2. Tracking fails loudly.

If a tag is missing, it is reported rather than quietly recording nothing.

  3. It waits before judging.

A 12-day conversion lag buffer, and a 21-day grace period after a campaign launches.

  4. A pause needs evidence.

A zero-conversion pause needs at least 8 clicks and a Wilson 95 percent upper bound under 2 percent. CPA is not trusted until about 10 conversions.

BEING STRAIGHT ABOUT IT

What this page cannot tell you

There is no benchmark here for what a call should cost you, or what a normal conversion rate looks like for your trade. Those numbers vary by trade, area and season, and we do not have a sourced figure we would stand behind. Anyone quoting you one without asking what you do and where should be treated carefully.

What this page can do is get the order of checks right.

FROM REAL ACCOUNTS

What do we know that a research-only guide would not?

Most advice about a quiet phone starts with the ads. In a local account the first thing worth checking is whether the calls are being counted at all.

A plumbing customer at 11pm does not fill in a form. They tap the number. If the account has one conversion action wired to a form submission, every one of those calls is invisible, and the bidding is being taught that the campaign does not work. VettedAd creates three separate conversion actions with three separate tags: the form, the website phone tap, and the WhatsApp or outbound click. They do not share an identifier.

The second thing is time. A keyword under 14 days old cannot be paused, a campaign gets a 21-day grace period, and a zero-conversion pause needs at least 8 clicks and a Wilson 95 percent upper bound under 2 percent. Those numbers exist because the most expensive mistake in a new account is not a bad keyword. It is switching off a good one in week two.

FAQ

What do people ask when Google Ads is not producing calls?

The usual causes are tracking that is not recording calls, a campaign too new to judge, or matching searches from people who were never going to call. Check tracking first, because it changes how you read everything else.

Longer than most people wait. Google says conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click, and its own instructions say to check a date range ending at least 30 days ago for complete data.

Early reports can mislead. Google says your spend is fully reported while conversions that arrive later are still missing, which makes cost per conversion look higher than it will settle at.

Either the calls are happening and not being counted, or the clicks are coming from searches that were never customers. Check your conversion actions first, then read your search terms.

Only if somebody set it up. A tap on a phone number on your website is a separate conversion action from a form submission, and if it was never created those calls are invisible in your reports.

Not on its own. A keyword with a handful of clicks has not produced enough evidence to judge, and pausing it early is how accounts lose the keywords that were working.

Yes, if auto-apply is turned on. Google's list includes adding broad match keywords, Search Partners expansion and Display expansion.

It varies too much by trade, area and season for a single number to be useful, and we do not publish one we cannot source. Compare against your own history rather than a figure from an article.
