THE PART PEOPLE GET WRONG
Two products, two budgets, one phone.
Both send calls to the same place. If you cannot answer, both get more expensive: one charges you per lead, the other charges you per click that never became a job.
LOCAL SERVICES ADS VS GOOGLE ADS
Checked against Google's own help pages, not guesswork.
Sources checked September 20, 2026.
THE MONEY DIFFERENCE
This is the difference everything else follows from.
You set an average weekly budget based on the leads you want. Google says you can spend more than that in a given week, but never more than your monthly max.
Leads judged invalid or low quality are not charged, and charged leads can be reassessed and credited automatically.
You pay when somebody clicks, whether they call you or leave. In exchange you pick the keywords, write the ads and choose the landing page.
Google describes standard Google Ads as customizable pay-per-click text ads open to any business.

THE FINE PRINT
Yes, in more ways than most comparisons mention. All five come from Google's own pages.
Local Services Ads cover certain service categories only. Check eligibility before planning around it.
Google's category list marks some entries as available in certain states only, such as drain expert and architect in California and Florida.
The Google Verified badge is unavailable for auto, beauty and dining verticals.
Google says lead credits are not available for health care verticals, tax specialists, or advertisers in EMEA.
Booking leads are available in the United States and Canada only.
If any of these rule you out, Google Ads is still open to you.
HOW TO CHOOSE
Two sentences each. No hedging.
Your category is eligible, you can pass verification, and somebody answers the phone quickly. Paying per lead instead of per click suits you when your budget is tight.
Your category is not eligible, or you want control over which searches you show for and where they land. You can separate an emergency job from a planned one, and send each to its own page.
You cannot answer calls fast. Responsiveness feeds Local Services ranking, and a missed call is a lead you paid to receive.
RUNNING BOTH
Yes. They are separate products with separate budgets, and plenty of local businesses run both.
The reason to bother is coverage. Local Services Ads sit at the top for the searches your category covers. Google Ads catch everything else: the specific job, the unusual search, the area or service your Local Services profile does not reach.
THE PART PEOPLE GET WRONG

WHERE VETTEDAD FITS
VettedAd works on the Google Ads side. It is an AI Google Ads manager for local and service businesses: it builds Search campaigns around what people actually search for, and important account changes wait for your approval before they launch. It does not manage Local Services Ads.

See the productIf your category is eligible for Local Services Ads and that channel alone fills your diary, you may not need this yet. If you sell products online and run Shopping campaigns judged on return on ad spend, VettedAd is not built for that either.

FROM REAL ACCOUNTS
Local businesses do not get contacted one way. Someone finds you at 11pm with a burst pipe and taps the phone number. Someone else fills in the form. Someone else opens WhatsApp. Plenty of tracking setups treat those as one thing, or miss two of the three.
VettedAd tracks the form submission, the website phone tap, and the WhatsApp or outbound click as separate conversion actions, each with its own tag. They do not share an identifier, so a visitor who submits the form and then taps WhatsApp counts as two real events instead of one.
That matters on this page because Local Services Ads counts the contact for you and charges per lead. On the Google Ads side, nobody counts it unless somebody set it up. If a tag is missing, VettedAd fails visibly rather than quietly reporting nothing.
